Matthew 6:25-34 (key verse 6:33)
Matthew 6:33 is often repeated on its own, as a line about priorities. The surrounding verses show Jesus addressing worry about food, clothing, and tomorrow.
Context
Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, to people who lived with many of the same concerns we face today: provision, security, the future. He was not dismissing those concerns. He was teaching His hearers to place them in the right order, pointing them to the Father's care before calling them to seek His Kingdom and righteousness.
Observe
- What reasons does Jesus give for refusing to remain governed by worry?
- What examples from creation does He use, and why?
- What does He say the Gentiles pursue, in contrast to His disciples?
- What promise is connected to seeking first the Kingdom, in verse 33?
Meaning
The command to seek first does not promise a life free of need or hardship. It calls the disciple to place God's reign and righteousness above anxious pursuit, trusting that the Father already knows what is needed. It is not a technique for gaining everything wanted. It exposes worry's claim on attention and redirects trust toward the Father.
Look to Christ
The One giving this command is the Son who reveals the Father. Christian trust rests in the character of God made known in Christ, not in the strength of anyone's ability to stop feeling concern.

What competes for first place in your life?
What does your attention reveal about what you are actually seeking first?
How would you respond differently if God's Kingdom came first in this situation?
Practice
Choose one area where anxiety has been leading your decisions. This week, pause before responding to that situation. Pray. Read Matthew 6:33. Then take one simple, faithful step.
Prayer
Father, You know every need before I speak it. Forgive me for the times I seek security before seeking You. Teach me to trust Your care, and to pursue Your Kingdom and Your righteousness before everything else. Amen.
