John 15:1-11
Most people read this passage as a lesson about fruit. Jesus begins somewhere earlier: connection.
Context
Jesus spoke these words to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion, knowing they would soon face uncertainty and fear. Rather than giving them a strategy, He gave them a picture: a vine, a branch, a relationship. Fruitfulness would not come from effort alone. It would come from remaining connected to Him.
Observe
- What word does Jesus repeat most often throughout this passage?
- What does He say a branch cannot do apart from Him, in verses 4-5?
- What happens to a branch that does not remain, in verse 6?
- What is the stated purpose of this teaching, in verse 11?
Meaning
Fruit is real and it matters, but it is not produced by isolated effort. The passage locates the source of fruit in a maintained connection to Christ, not in the branch's own strength. Striving apart from that connection is not simply inefficient. Jesus says it produces nothing.
Look to Christ
Jesus places Himself at the center of this image as the vine, the source the branches depend on entirely. Apart from Him, in His own words, they can do nothing.
Reflect
Where are you tempted to rely on your own strength rather than remain in Christ?
What would it look like to remain in Christ before trying harder?
Practice
Choose one part of your day this week to slow down. Before beginning work, checking your phone, or moving to the next task, spend five minutes in prayer, not asking for productivity, simply remaining with Him.
Prayer
Jesus, You never asked me to produce fruit apart from You. You asked me to remain. Teach me to trust Your presence more than my effort. Help me stay connected to You in ordinary moments. Amen.
